RACE: a campaign to strengthen STEM education amidst pandemic

The conduct of the Philippine Science High School (PSHS) National Competitive Exam (NCE) which was done yearly in several test centers nationwide to select qualified incoming grade 7 scholars had been a big challenge during the onset of the CoVid19 pandemic. Thus, instead of taking the NCE, interested and qualified incoming grade 7 students were made to apply for the 6-year scholarship program through the two-stage screening process called PSHS Requirements for Admission, Criteria and Evaluation (RACE).

The said selection process is in its third year of implementation since 2020. In Caraga Region Campus, this year has seen the highest number of RACE applicants which can be accounted to the collective effort of the management and employees to campaign for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) education despite the restrictions of pandemic.

Instead of the aspiring scholars gathering in testing sites, PSHS employees are sent to different municipalities to introduce STEM education and encourage qualified grade 6 pupils to submit application requirements online, to the nearest pick up points, or to send them directly to the campus via courier.

2022 Recognition Program Marks First Step Towards Return of Old Normal

The Philippine Science High School - Caraga Region Campus recently held its first in-person recognition program in two years, recognizing the achievements of its students during the 2021-2022 school year. The recognition program was a highlight of the day, as Director’s Listers and other award-winning students were given the chance to stand on stage in front of their peers and receive the recognition they deserved. The pride of being physically present and experiencing the thrill of the moment was evident in the triumphant smiles of the students as they posed for photos with their awards.

In contrast to the previous recognition events held over Zoom, the first in-person recognition program since 2019 was a positive way to re-introduce students to the traditional classroom setting. The return to face-to-face classes brought a sense of excitement and joy to students who were eager to see their friends and classmates once again.

The recognition program was a fitting tribute to the hard work and achievements of the students of the Philippine Science High School - Caraga Region Campus. Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, the event provided a much-needed opportunity for students, teachers, and parents to come together and celebrate their successes.

PSHS-CRC Virtual Higher STEM Education and Scholarship Fair SY 2022 - 2023

Choosing the “right” career path can be daunting. This is why the students should be provided with an avenue for career services. This is to empower students to discover their passion, explore their career options, develop their personal career plan, and attain their goals as part of their lifelong educational philosophy. With this apparent lack of a career goal and the manifestation of misinformed decision-making in selecting a college course and university have prompted the Guidance and Counseling Unit of the Student Services Division, in coordination with Life Career Development Program coordinator, to conduct an online college fair where a collection of colleges and universities can communicate and provide information about STEM academic programs including admission requirements, enrollment processes, scholarship grants, and more.
